Granite Signage

Homeowners who have chosen products for their new home, or who have renovated a kitchen or bath would be quick to point out the benefits in using granite. What many homeowners aren’t aware of are the the many uses for granite outside their home and around their community.

Many people recognize granite because it is the most common igneous rock found at Earth’s surface.  In addition to countertops is used to make many objects that we encounter in daily life. These include floor tiles, paving stone, curbing, stair treads, building veneer, cemetery monuments, and yes signage.

Granite is hard enough to resist most abrasion, strong enough to bear significant weight, inert enough to resist weathering and it accepts a brilliant polish. These characteristics make it a very desirable and useful in making many types of outdoor signage.

Monuments
One of the most popular forms of granite signage is the granite monument. Most often thought of as something used in cemeteries, granite monuments should also be thought of for community entrance signage. Because granite can be purchased in either rock form, generally 4″-8″ thick, or in sheet form, most often 8’x4′, when used in monument signage it can either be installed as a free-standing unit or placed into an existing wall as a plaque.

Recognition Signs
Another popular use for granite signage is in the form of recognition signs. Because granite has colors that are inherent to the stone itself, the colors will not fade or require repainting, thus making it a perfect solution for providing plaques for historical purposes. Granite plaques used for recognition signage are generally mounted onto a pedestal post and angled at 45 degrees to allow for easy reading.

Address Plaques
Granite signage in the form of an address plaques has become increasingly popular, especially when compared to some of the other popular material choices like cast aluminum and wood. Granite address plaques will not corrode, show very little fading in the copy areas, provide a dimensional look and will not rot, splinter or warp.

Golf Course Signs
One of the harshest environments that exists for displaying signage is on a golf course. With the extreme UV exposure, lawn chemicals and fertilizers and other natural elements often found on a golf course, finding the right material can often be a challenge. Common materials used include plastic, wood, metal and granite. Of these materials only granite offers a durability that will requires little maintenance, other than a routine cleaning. By sandblasting graphics into the material, the natural colors of the stone can withstand the harshest of conditions without worry of corrosion, fading, delaminating, warping, rotting, splitting or peeling.
